The title of Princess Diana is passed on to the Duchess of Cambridge
Catherine, Princess of Wales, has inherited Princess Diana's title and is now known as the Duchess of Cambridge. King Charles III, our new monarch, acknowledged the title change in his first address to the people as king.
He opened his address by paying tribute to and honoring his mother's life of service. "Throughout her life, Her Majesty The Queen, my loving mother, was an inspiration and example to me and all my family, and we owe her the most profound gratitude any family can due to their mother; for her love, affection, guidance, understanding, and example," he said. "I know her death has caused enormous pain for so many of you, and I share that sense of loss with you all."
He also expressed gratitude to his new Queen Consort, Camilla, for her "own committed public service" since their marriage 17 years ago. "I know she will bring the firm devotion to duty on which I have grown to rely so much to the rigors of her new role."
When Camilla married Charles, it was determined that she would not adopt the title of Princess of Wales because it was so intimately associated with the late Princess Diana.
The monarch then addressed his heir, William, reaffirming that he will inherit both his Welsh (Prince of Wales) and Scottish (Duke of Cornwall) titles alongside his wife, Kate.
"Today, I am happy to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have had the great honor of bearing for so much of my life and duty," he added.
"With Catherine by his side, I am confident that our new Prince and Princess of Wales will continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, bringing the marginal to the center ground where important assistance may be provided."
In his remarks, he also recognized his other son and daughter-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, saying, "I want to convey my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to construct their life abroad."
The official social media accounts of William and Kate have already been modified to reflect their new titles of Prince and Princess of Wales. According to Sky News, Kate "appreciates the history connected" with the title, but "will understandably want to look forward as she forges her own path."
